Dental Decay

Although tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, it is not impenetrable. It is the body’s armour, protecting the vulnerable inner tooth surface from all the chemicals we take into our body in the form of food and drinks and even air pollution.

Cavities (decay) are caused by a pH imbalance in your mouth allowing the outer enamel shell to be penetrated by the acid from specific bacteria. When dentists ‘drill and fill’ cavities, they are only treating the result of the decay process not the imbalance itself—and the decay usually  returns! While brushing and flossing can reduce bacteria, neither alters the potential acidic bacterial imbalance in your mouth and you continue to get cavities.

Neutralisation of the acidic pH can be achieved through specific products we can recommend including mouth rinses and tooth-pastes, these can change the chemical balance of your mouth and lower the bacterial count and are scientifically proven to reduce the risk of cavities.

The four main causes of nearly all dental decay are related to:

Likewise as a healthy diet and exercise serve as preventative factors against heart disease, a number of oral care recommendations can correct a bacterial imbalance and protect your teeth from decay and gum health issues in the future.

Ask us to assist you in evaluating your pH (acid level of your mouth) to see what your risk factors are in order to reduce your risk for future decay. If we work together we can reduce your risk so the life expectancy of your dental care will increase significantly.

You’re never fully dressed without a smile.
